Chapter Eighteen

ANDREW KIM PLUCKED THE HEAVY casserole dish out of Kameron’s hands. “Let me help you with that.” He carried it into the living room and placed it on a trivet Kameron had placed on the big ottoman tray.

“Where did we put the napkins, babe?” Paul opened kitchen drawers, one after another.

“They’re in the top drawer of the china hutch.”

“Since when do we have a–” His eyes widened when he saw the massive cabinet, complete with glass doors and interior lighting. “Another delivery from the Rosarios?”

Kameron smiled. “Yes. Raquel says it completes the set, but I think she stopped by to check on me. Don’t worry. I told her she doesn’t have to bring furniture every time she comes over.”

Kameron opened the microwave, stirred the bowl of spiced vegetables, and set the timer for three minutes. “Remember how I thought I’d scandalized her when I said we weren’t married? I was wrong. We had lunch together, and she didn’t guilt-trip me once. Isn’t that nice?”

Paul made a noncommittal noise.

“This is how it begins. One day, you’re accepting a free china hutch and the next day you’re the kind of person who owns matching plates for when the company comes over. And then you have to throw dinner parties. Before you know it, you’re in full-on entertaining mode.” She shook her head. “I’m not ready for that. Not yet.”

“It’s the flatware industrial complex,” Paul said, nodding along. “That’s how they hook you into the system.”

Andrew came back into the kitchen, bouncing like a child with energy to spare. “Hey! I recognize this furniture. It belonged to the Zees.”

“The who?” Kameron asked.

“Tina and Robbie Zee! They lived here for a few years, and then one night they up and left. No one’s seen them since. Kicker told me about them.”

“Wait. You’re saying that couple was… disappeared and now we’ve got their china hutch?” Kameron eyed the new furniture warily.

“Kicker told me they were abducted by aliens,” Andrew admitted, “but it was more likely that they had some kind of family emergency.”

Kameron patted Andrew on the shoulder as she passed him by. “If we disappear too, please make sure this china hutch is destroyed. It may be consuming human souls.”

“But what if the hutch contains the souls of the people it eats? Did you ever consider that?” He raised an eyebrow. “It would be wrong to destroy it without releasing them first.”

Kameron opened a drawer, grabbed a fistful of forks, and shoved them into Andrew’s hands. “We’re scaring Paul.” She winked at him. “Go sit.”

Outside the bungalow’s front windows, remnants of daylight were rapidly fading. They sat together in the living room with plates on their laps. A dog barked somewhere in the distance. Andrew grabbed the big spoon stuck in the vegetable dish and held his hand out for Kameron’s plate. “Let me.”

Paul glanced at Kameron. “Why is he allowed to help you, but I’m not?”

“What can I say? Women love me.”

“Andrew is a guest,” Kameron said placidly. “He can do as he likes.
